It is common to start with type tests to verify integrity of HVDC cables and continue with pre-qualification tests to evaluate their reliability. Additional requirements include withstand to non-standard dynamic voltage stresses such as polarity reversal and transient overvoltages. One electrical test is superimposed impulse voltage. Different test circuits are used to perform this and impose technical challenges.
