Evaluating Bushing Performance for Shunt Rector & GIS Connected Transformer Applications

Bushings

In recent years, the ASEAN electrical system has witnessed an alarming increase in the failure rate of reactor and Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) connected transformer bushings. This concerning trend is not unique to the region, as global reports from organizations such as CIGRE have highlighted similar issues. The primary culprits for these failures include the frequent switching of shunt reactors and the occurrence of Very Fast Transient Phenomenon (VFTO) in GIS applications.

Plan to participate in the upcoming 2023 INMR WORLD CONGRESS in Bangkok, where a lecture by bushings specialist, Gobi Kannan Supramaniam of Malaysia’s Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) will present findings from a detailed investigation into specific bushing failures in their Grid over the last two years. These failures occurred on 300 kV and 132 kV systems on both reactor and GIS connected transformers. Notably, his presentation will discuss the difficulties faced in diagnosing some of these bushings within GIS-connected applications and also advocate for a revaluation of circuit breaker choices, emphasizing the importance of controlled switching to prevent failures.
