Composite Insulators with Optical Fibers for HV Applications
by Jens Seifert

Fiber optics used for signal transmission between high voltage and ground potential must be protected against the environment with necessary creepage to avoid ageing and flashover. Protection by integration into an insulator depends on equipment and composite insulators with integrated fibers have so far tended to be individually developed. This presentation offers examples of design solutions for different applications based on hollow core insulators and also reviews results from testing such products. Also, a new project team within IEC is introduced, which is about to establish a technical specification for insulators with integrated fiber optics.
