Tests with artificial pollution are used mainly for selection and dimensioning of high voltage insulators to be applied in polluted conditions while tests of naturally polluted insulators are used for evaluating flashover performance after removal of insulators from service to assess degree of surface degradation due to long-term exposure to service conditions.
